Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a well-known treatment approach with a significant body of research supporting its effectiveness at reducing symptoms of depression. CBT sees depression, as well as anxiety and other mental health conditions, as the result of problematic thoughts (cognitions) and behaviors. The highly structured nature of CBT makes it an almost perfect fit for a self-guided workbook, which is no doubt why there are so many CBT workbooks for depression out there.


The Cognitive Behavioral Workbook for Depression is designed to help you identify and replace faulty thoughts and self-beliefs that drive the cycle of depression. The book is highly interactive with dozens of worksheets and exercises to help you gain familiarity with irrational thought patterns that commonly accompany depression.


The workbook provides extensive information about depression and suggests effective strategies for managing unpleasant emotions. Like the other CBT-based workbooks mentioned here, Back from the Bluez outlines a step-by-step approach for processing depression and includes many practical exercises, worksheets and activities.


I was first introduced to The Self-Compassion Skills Workbook by a therapist I used to share an office with years ago. I started using her copy so often that she eventually ordered me my own. While this workbook, like others on this list, is not specific to depression, the skills it introduces are extremely relevant and useful to anyone experiencing symptoms of depression.


Included with the book is a CD with audio recordings of guided mindfulness practices that correspond to the practices and skills outlined in the workbook. But you can also listen to these recorded mindfulness sessions for free over at timdesmond.net.


The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook does not focus solely on depression, but the skills it teaches have been shown to be effective at improving depression. Consistent with DBT, the workbook emphasizes the importance of four general skill areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Coping with Depression: This workbook is designed to provide you with some information about depression and suggested strategies for how you can manage your mood. It is organised into modules that are designed to be worked through in sequence. Although it is not necessary that you complete one module before going on to the next, this is recommended. Each module includes information, worksheets, and suggested exercises or activities.


Checking any of these items could indicate a problem with anxiety or depression. The more items you check, the more serious your possible problem. If you think you might be anxious or depressed, consider checking with your primary health care provider to rule out physical causes. Then think about seeking a referral to a mental health professional.


The EMOTION materials constitute a program for helping youth to manage anxiety and depression. The program is a 20-session intervention for youth ages 8 to 12 years who have difficulties with symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. The program is designed to reduce the likelihood of the development of an anxiety and/or depression disorder. Implemented in a group format, EMOTION integrates core components of empirically supported treatments for anxiety and for depression in youth (Coping Cat, Kendall & Hedtke, 2006a 2006b; ACTION, Stark et al., 2007).


One last statement before we get to the books. Why anxiety and depression together? Well, because they often occur together. In fact, they occur so often together that people will mistake one for the other. A close friend of mine recently spent the better part of a year constantly complaining of anxiety and stress. After a couple of months of therapy, she discovered that she had actually been deeply depressed. Similarly, I felt depressed for a brief period at the beginning of this year and looking back, it turns out I was incredibly anxious about something in my life and the feelings of lethargy/meaninglessness were merely my ways of escaping that anxiety.


Investigative journalist Johann Hari, who has personally battled depression most of his life, journeyed worldwide to interview the leading experts on how to solve depression and anxiety. This discovery journey offers evidence on different possible causes of these disorders and provides hope for the future.


What makes this book unique is that it addresses depression not just on a biochemical and treatment level, but goes on to discuss the social and political factors impacting mental health and how we can start working towards sustainable change.


While we like this book, we do have a caveat. The author clearly and strongly does not support the use of medication for treating anxiety and panic disorder. While we, too, prefer non-pharmaceutical approaches whenever possible, there are situations where medication is essential to treatment. The use of medication is ultimately up to you and your prescriber.


Sometimes it can feel like anxiety comes out of nowhere. But the reality is there is a connection between the anxiety you feel and your thoughts and emotions. Clinical psychologist Jill Weber reveals how you can use this connection to manage racing thoughts, worst-case scenario thinking, and a self-defeating mentality that can reinforce anxiety.


Using evidence from a combination of therapy modalities, she helps you work through your thoughts so that they no longer have the same power, even though you are aware of them. These practical strategies can help you begin to manage situations like social anxiety, insomnia, and panic attacks finding calm.


Anxiety and depression books are excellent ways to improve your understanding of mental health issues and how to manage them in your own life. And with depression and anxiety being the most common mental health issues today, there are many resources available to offer guidance during a difficult time.


However, depression and anxiety are serious issues, negatively impacting day to day functioning for many. Self-help strategies in anxiety and depression books are an excellent resource but should not be solely relied on for moderate to severe cases.
